Stories of hope

When the earth shook Antakya, Turkey in February 2023, it didn’t just destroy buildings, it upended lives. Among the many who lost everything was Azra, a devoted mother and small business owner whose canteen once served snacks and supplies to local students.
In an instant, her home crumbled and her livelihood vanished. But Azra’s spirit remained unbroken.
In the weeks after the quake, Azra’s children ate cold meals from relief tents, while students returned to school without their favorite corner shop
Azra faced a painful road of uncertainty. Yet through determination, hard work, and the compassion of those who stepped in to help, she began to reclaim what was lost.
Today, Azra is reopening her beloved canteen in the schoolyard of Ekin School with a grant from Shai Fund—providing not only food and drinks, but a sense of stability for students who are still processing the trauma of the disaster.
“This is more than just reopening a shop,” Azra shares. “It’s a sign that life continues, and faith sustains us.”
Azra’s story is a shining example of how donor generosity and community support can restore more than buildings—they restore dignity, opportunity, and hope. Her canteen is once again a place of laughter, nourishment, and resilience.
In the face of overwhelming loss, Azra didn’t give up. And because of those who gave to help her, she didn’t have to.
Azra’s story is just one example of how Shai Fund helps turn hardship into hope. In regions devastated by disaster and conflict, this initiative equips displaced and returning families with the means to start again with dignity, purpose, and long-term economic strength.
The grocery store directly benefits the lives of Azra, her husband, and children in addition to providing for her aging parents. After opening the business, one month of sales provided food to 433 people who are also committed to staying and rebuilding their lives.
Through the Livelihood Project, religious minorities and vulnerable communities gain the resources and training to open small businesses, learn vital trades, and provide for their families. It’s not about surviving a crisis; it’s about reviving entire communities.
At Shai Fund, we’ve witnessed that resilience. With your support, we’ve been able to empower individuals and communities to begin rebuilding their lives and futures.
