In line with their principles of providing support for people in need, for the internally displaced, and for survivors of war and massacres in Syria, the Levantine National Council (LNC) and the Syriac Cross for Relief and Development organized the preparation of food baskets in the Syrian capital, Daramsuq (Damascus). The baskets, funded by US-based humanitarian organization Shai Fund, were then sent to Suwayda as part of the ongoing aid campaign carried out by the Syriac Cross and Shai Fund for residents of the southern province—both for those who remain in Suwayda city and those who have been displaced to shelter centers nearby.
Under the patronage of its Patriarchal Vicar, the Melkite Greek (Rûm) Catholic community assisted in the distribution of food baskets to families in need.
Earlier this year, the Levantine National Council and the Syriac Cross for Relief and Development distributed aid in places such a Khabab to displaced persons from Suwayda.
It is worth noting that these waves of displacement occurred following sectarian clashes in July of this year in the southern provinces of Syria. The violence resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians and the forced displacement of large numbers of residents due to the use of heavy weaponry, intimidation tactics, and open acts of expulsion.
