Muslim Background Believers in Afghanistan

Millions across the Muslim world are turning to Christ at great personal risk. Nowhere is that cost higher than in Afghanistan.

Around the Muslim world, millions of men and women are turning to Christ, often after visions, dreams, or encountering the Gospel online. This is the fastest-growing expression of Christianity in some of the hardest places on earth. Yet theirs is also the most dangerous path a Christian can walk. Unlike those born into Christian families, Muslim background believers, or MBBs, face rejection from every side — their families, their communities, their governments, and extremist groups.

Choosing Christ often means losing everything: home, work, security, sometimes even life itself. That's why standing with MBBs is not just charity, it is obedience. It is joining God in the most courageous story unfolding in our generation.

The Cost of Following Christ

Across the Muslim world, believers live in the shadows. In countries like Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan, conversion from Islam is considered apostasy, punishable by death or imprisonment. Families may carry out honor killings. Communities drive believers into hiding. Governments deny them jobs, rights, and protection.

And yet, this is precisely where the church is growing the fastest. Researchers estimate that as of 2010, there were already 10 million Muslim Background Believers globally, and the numbers are climbing every year.

Think about that: a hidden church, multiplying in secret, often with no buildings, no institutions, and no public recognition. Only faith, courage, and an unshakable hope in Christ.

Why Support Matters

These believers are extraordinarily vulnerable. Imagine Amira in Egypt, who wears a hijab and recites Quranic verses when her Salafi brother visits, just to survive. Or Kashif in Pakistan, who lives in hiding because the government refuses to change his documentation, making him a permanent target.

Without outside support, many of these believers are isolated and crushed by persecution. But with support, they thrive — building underground house churches, discipling others, and planting seeds of hope for entire nations.

Afghanistan: A Living Example

Nowhere is this clearer than in Afghanistan. Since the Taliban's takeover in 2021, Afghanistan has ranked among the most dangerous countries in the world to be a Christian. Conversion is treated as treason against both religion and nation. Families who publicly declared their Christian faith on national ID cards are hunted by name.

Yet even under such pressure, the Afghan church is alive. And by God's grace, through the projects we've been privileged to run together, we've seen how support changes everything.

Impact Beyond Numbers

MBBs are not only surviving, they are leading. When given the chance, they rise to disciple others, plant churches, and even reach back into Afghanistan with the Gospel.

Take "Sunila," a women's rights activist who fled the Taliban. In Pakistan, she encountered the Afghan House Church network, received hospitality from believers, and came to faith. Today, she leads Bible studies for others. Or "Jawad," once a refugee, now producing podcasts and media that reach thousands of Afghans online with the Gospel.

These are not passive recipients of aid. They are the future leaders of the Afghan church.

The Call to Us

Friends, this is why our support matters. When we stand with MBBs, we are not only protecting lives — we are investing in the most dynamic movement of church growth in hostile regions today.

But this window is fragile. Families are being deported from Iran and Pakistan back into Taliban hands. Ministry centers risk closure. Leaders cry out for training and Scripture in their own languages. Without continued support, this movement risks being crushed. With support, it will multiply.
